Frequently Asked Questions
Is this actually different from potting mix?
Yes. Completely different category. Potting mix is shredded bark from dead trees. Super Soil is mineral-based. Sandy loam, parboiled rice hulls, washed coco coir, and biochar. The bark in potting mix decomposes and turns into a brick. Mineral structure does not. That is the whole difference. Everything else flows from that one fact.
How long does Super Soil last?
The sandy loam is permanent. Sand and mineral structure do not break down. The rice hulls, coco coir, and biochar decompose very slowly — far slower than bark — and keep the soil aerated and draining for years.
You will not be replacing this bag every season the way you do with potting mix. Once a year, refresh the pot by lifting the plant out, trimming the roots back a bit, and adding a fresh layer of Super Soil to the bottom of the pot before setting the plant back in. Adding new soil at the bottom keeps the root flare exposed at the top where it belongs. Topdressing the surface buries the flare and slowly chokes the plant.
That is the whole annual maintenance. You buy it once and you are done with the yearly potting mix cycle.
Do I need to mix it with my old potting mix?
No. The whole point is to replace the bark, not blend it in. Mixing Super Soil with old potting mix means you still have decomposing bark in the pot. Still gnats. Still compaction. Empty the pot completely and refill with Super Soil only.
How do I get the best results when I repot?
Wash the old soil off completely. Trim the roots. Then plant in Super Soil.
Most people lift the plant out of its old pot and drop the root ball straight into a new container. That keeps all the old problems trapped in the soil clinging to the roots. The bark. The gnat eggs. The wetting agents. The compaction.
Here is what to do instead:
Step 1. Rinse the roots clean.
Pull the plant out of its old pot. Hold the root ball under a slow stream of water in the sink or with a garden hose. Gently work the old soil out with your fingers until you can see the actual roots.
Step 2. Trim the dead and damaged roots.
Use clean scissors or pruners. Cut off any roots that are brown, mushy, black, or wrapped in tight circles around the bottom of the root ball. Keep the white, firm roots. Trimming forces the plant to push new healthy growth instead of dragging dead weight.
Step 3. Plant in Super Soil only.
Do not save any of the old potting mix. Fill the pot with fresh Super Soil. Set the trimmed root ball in the center. Fill in around the roots. Water thoroughly with Plant Super Boost mixed in to charge the soil with living microbes from day one.
This is the difference between a plant that sort of recovers and a plant that takes off. Same Super Soil. Different starting point.
Will my fungus gnat problem actually go away?
Yes. Most people see them gone in one to two weeks. Fungus gnats need decomposing organic matter to breed in. Super Soil has none. The larvae in your pot die off because they have nothing to eat. The adults have nowhere to lay new eggs. Gone for good.
If your plant is already infested, follow the repotting steps above. Wash the old soil off the roots completely. The eggs and larvae go down the drain with the old bark. The plant goes into clean mineral soil. Gnats cannot come back because there is nothing left for them to live in.
Will it work in my raised beds?
Yes. For small raised beds you can fill the bed completely with Super Soil.
For larger raised beds, you do not need to fill the whole volume with bagged Super Soil. You can amend your own existing soil with sand and blocks of coco coir to match the same structure. Buy clean coarse sand from a landscape supply. We also sell compressed blocks of coco coir on our site — washed, salt-tested, and ready to rehydrate in water. Mix into your existing bed soil at roughly equal parts.
One rule. Do not use bark of any kind. Not pine bark. Not cedar mulch. Not wood chips. Bark is what causes every problem Super Soil was built to solve. Mineral structure plus coco coir plus your existing soil is the formula. Bark breaks that formula.
For the cleanest start in a raised bed, top the amended soil with a bag of Super Soil and plant directly into it. Water in with Plant Super Boost to charge the new soil with living microbes. The roots find the mineral structure and the biology at the same time.
How much do I need for my pot?
For containers, fill the pot completely. Our 10-pound bag fills about a 5-gallon pot. For larger containers, use multiple bags.
What exactly is in the bag, and how is each ingredient prepped?
Four ingredients. Every one of them processed for safety and performance before it goes in.
Sandy loam. Mined from our own land in Hargill, Texas. Virgin soil. The same soil the Rio Grande Valley citrus industry was built on. Steam-sterilized on site at our farm. Kills pathogens. Kills weed seeds. Clean structure, every batch.
Parboiled rice hulls. Rice hulls are partially boiled before being added to the mix. Parboiling kills any seeds that could sprout into rice plants in your container. It also stabilizes the hulls so they last longer in the soil instead of breaking down in the first season. Aeration that holds.
Washed coco coir. Raw coco coir is high in salt because the coconuts grow near oceans. Salt damages roots. Our coco coir is washed multiple times with fresh water to remove the salt, then EC tested (electrical conductivity test) to confirm salt levels are safe for plants. Only the washed and tested batches go in the bag.
Biochar from pyrolyzed wheat stalks. Wheat stalks are heated at high temperatures with no oxygen, a process called pyrolysis. The high heat sterilizes the material and creates a permanent microscopic structure full of tiny chambers. Microbes move in and never leave. It is the long-term home for the biology that feeds your plant.
Every batch of finished Super Soil is steam-sterilized after blending. Zero pathogens. Zero weed seeds. Zero hidden problems.
Does the coco coir have salt in it?
No. Not in our bag.
Raw coco coir is high in salt because coconuts grow near oceans. Most cheap coco products skip the washing step to save money. The salt damages roots, burns leaves, and stunts growth.
Our coco coir is washed multiple times with fresh water to flush the salt out, then EC tested (electrical conductivity test) to confirm salt levels are safe for plants. Only the washed and tested batches go in the bag.
We source coco coir overseas because the best quality grows near the equator where coconuts grow. Everything else in Super Soil comes from our family land in Hargill, Texas. The coco coir is the one ingredient we source internationally and we process it ourselves before it ever touches the rest of the soil.
Is it safe for vegetables and food crops?
Yes. Tested for 23 pesticides and herbicides at Waters Agricultural Laboratories. Every single one came back undetected. Every ingredient steam-sterilized. Every batch of finished soil sterilized again after blending. Zero pathogens. Zero weed seeds. This is what your kids dig in. We tested it like it matters.
Can I use it for indoor houseplants?
This is where Super Soil works best. Indoor plants are stuck in tiny containers with no microbial life and no way for old potting mix to refresh itself. Mineral soil gives them permanent drainage, no compaction, and no gnats. The fiddle leaf fig, monstera, and pothos that have been struggling on your windowsill for two years will look different by month three.
